Nominations for the IPCC
Call for IPCC author nominations
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the United Nations’ body for assessing the scientific basis of climate change, its impacts and future risks, and options for mitigation and adaptation. IPCC assessments provide a scientific basis for governments to develop climate-related policies and contribute to global climate action under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
Singapore has been invited to nominate experts for consideration as Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors for the three key Working Group contributions to IPCC´s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7):
Working Group I (The Physical Science Basis);
Working Group II (Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability); and
Working Group III (Mitigation of Climate Change).
The call for nominations follows agreement on the outlines of the three Working Group contributions during its 62nd Session held in Hangzhou, China.
Coordinating Lead Authors and Lead Authors are responsible for drafting the different chapters of the reports and revising those based on comments submitted during the review process, while Review Editors are responsible for assisting the Working Group/Task Force Bureau in identifying reviewers for the expert review process. Please refer to the IPCC Procedures (Annex 1) for more details of the roles and responsibilities for the various authors.
The Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment, as the IPCC Focal Point for Singapore, is shortlisting experts for Singapore’s nominations, for submission to the IPCC Secretariat. The nominations will be subject to a further selection process by the IPCC.
The call for author nominations is currently open. Should you wish to nominate experts in your organisation, please download and fill in the nomination templates for the respective Working Group contributions here:
Working Group I (The Physical Science Basis): Please download nomination template here.
Working Group II (Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability): Please download nomination template here.
Working Group III (Mitigation of Climate Change): Please download nomination template here.
Once completed, please fill in the nomination form here by 7 April 2025.
For more information about the nomination process and what it means to contribute as an author, interested applicants may wish to view the video recording from the following informational session organised by the Centre for Climate Research Singapore (CCRS) here. Details of the session are as follows:
Date: 1st April 2025, Tuesday (11:00am – 12:00pm)
Presenter: Winston Chow (SMU)
Topic: Informational Session: How Southeast Asian experts can contribute to the IPCC’s 7th Assessment Report (AR7)
Abstract: Join us for an insightful webinar on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s latest call for authors for the Seventh Assessment Report (AR7). The IPCC, the United Nations body responsible for assessing climate science, seeks expert contributions to advance knowledge on climate change driven by human activities. With the outlines of the three Working Group contributions finalized in February 2025, the IPCC is now accepting nominations for climate experts to serve as authors. This session will clarify the nomination process, the agreed outlines, and what it means to contribute as an author. Experts will also discuss key themes of AR7 and the importance of diverse perspectives in strengthening climate science. Whether you're a researcher, policymaker, or practitioner, this webinar will provide valuable insights into the process and opportunities for engagement.
Bio: Prof. Winston Chow is Co-Chair of Working Group II of the IPCC, leading its contributions on climate impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability for AR7, including a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities. He is the first Singaporean to hold this position. Previously, he was a Lead Author for AR6, contributing to urban assessments, and a member of the IPCC Task Group on Data Support. Winston is a Professor of Urban Climate at Singapore Management University (SMU), where he leads research on urban heat adaptation and co-leads the Cooling Singapore initiative. He holds a Ph.D. from Arizona State University and degrees in Geography from National University of Singapore.
(ii) Nominations for IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data)
Singapore has also been invited to nominate experts to serve in the IPCC Task Group on Data Support for Climate Change Assessments (TG-Data) for the AR7 cycle, as either Co-Chairs or members of the Task Group.
TG-Data is mandated by the IPCC Panel to provide guidance to the Data Distribution Centre (DDC) on curation, traceability, stability, availability and transparency of data and scenarios related to the reports of the IPCC. Together with the DDC, the Task Group facilitates the availability and consistent use of climate change-related data and scenarios in support of the implementation of the IPCC’s programme of work. Please refer to the IPCC’s website for more details on the TG-Data.
The TG-Data work mainly requires, but is not restricted to, data specialists with expertise in areas such as data provenance, scientific workflows, climate data handling systems, FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) Data principles, and development and/or analysis of climate and observational datasets.
